Panel Discussion: The Transition of TDM Interconnection to IP
Moderator: Jim Burt, Director - Policy, Sprint Government Affairs
Panelists: Pierce Gorman, Senior Engineer, Voice Architecture, Sprint
Jerry James, CEO, Comptel
George Hammons, Senior VoIP Engineer, Excel Telecommunications
Despite the growing existence of IP-based interconnects and proclamations that the PSTN is quickly dying, reality and history both indicate that the transition to an all-IP world will take considerable time and effort. But the process has begun, at least as it relates to recent activity initiated by the U.S Federal Communications Commission. The issues are voluminous and include basic considerations such as the definition of an over-arching regulatory framework and establishment of timeframes and key milestones, to complexities such as compensation models, definition of traffic types and global ramifications. How it will all evolve and what the final solution might look like is the subject of this panel discussion, featuring a mix of leading regulatory and technical experts. Key questions that will be addressed in this session include:
- What should be the regulatory framework for IP interconnection?
- What are the major decisions that need to be made?
- What will the migration from TDM interconnection to IP interconnection look like?
- What are the international considerations, if any, for IP interconnection?
- QoS standards are essential – how will those be handled?
- What are the central economic issues related to investment and compensation?

Keynote Presentation from Dan Lyons: What Would Steve Do: The 8 Simple Secrets to Apple's Success
Over the past 15 years Apple has gone from being nearly bankrupt to being the biggest company in the world, with a market value approaching half a trillion dollars. How did they do it? Newsweek Technology Editor Dan Lyons, author of the critically acclaimed book, Options: The Secret Life of Steve Jobs, and one of the world's top experts on all things Apple, explains the simple principles that enabled Steve Jobs to lead Apple through the most amazing comeback in corporate history. In a talk that is equal parts stand-up comedy and business school case study, Lyons tells an engaging tale that captures the spirit of Steve Jobs and leaves his audience with eight rules that can be applied in any organization or industry. Why did Steve Jobs shun focus groups and trust its own taste instead? How does Apple evoke such strong responses from its fans and get thousands of people to line up outside Apple stores, turning each new product release into a kind of cultural event? Who was the little-known mentor who guided Steve Jobs in the early years of Apple and created the three words that have guided Apple's marketing philosophy since its origins? Why does Apple dare to take risks while its competitors play it safe? How is that other companies sell products, while Apple sells an experience? What drove Steve Jobs to be such a fanatical perfectionist? Lyons spent five years writing the world's most popular Apple-centric blog, "The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs," and hopes that the legacy of Steve Jobs will inspire a new generation of innovators and risk- takers who will dare to "think different."
Speaker Bio: Dan Lyons enthralled the worlds of business, media and Silicon Valley with his wildly popular, lovingly hilarious and insightful blog, The Secret Diary of Fake Steve Jobs, which drew as many as 1.5 million visitors each month--not bad for a one-man website with zero dollars spent on marketing or promotion. Writing in the voice of Apple's genius CEO, Lyons pioneered a vivid, entertaining new form of journalism. Think what might happen if Fast Company merged with The Onion, or if Hunter S. Thompson wrote for BusinessWeek, and you get the idea. Along the way Dan made lots of mistakes and learned some important lessons about how to engage in an online conversation. He also fell in love with new media, in particular with its ability to give everyone a voice. As Dan puts it, "There is no such thing as an 'audience' anymore. The people we used to think of as 'viewers' are no longer content to just watch the show--they want to write the show, and star in it too. Instead of fighting that, we should embrace that energy and use it to create new forms of journalism, new forms of entertainment, and new forms of marketing and advertising."

Tunnel Session Management:
|
The use of real-time communications (RTC) services via the Internet (a.k.a. over-the-top, or OTT) is allowing service
providers to expand service reach to both enterprises and mobile subscribers and compete with traditional OTT services
such as Skype, Apple FaceTime and Google Voice. The ubiquity of mobile apps running on smartphones and tablets is driving
an additional trend within enterprises called “Bring Your Own Device,” or BYOD. However, strict firewall policies &
hostile networks repeatedly prevent end users from accessing OTT services. OTT communications via wireless networks
(3G, 4G or Wi-Fi) presents additional challenges including compliance, confidentiality and reliability over “best-efforts”
networks that plague ‘off-net customers’.
Acme Packet has developed a series of demonstrations that showcase the capabilities and benefits of TSM exclusively for Interconnect 2012 attendees.
